First time I saw a Miata was in Gran Turismo: "90 horsepower? Why would anyone choose this?" Never gave Miatas a second thought after that; too slow, convertible would make it all wonky in turns. Little did I know.
Went for a ride in this Miata in '17 when I was looking for a new project car, I had previously sat in another friend's Miata and it was *very* much cockpit-like, just as the DSMs I had owned previously were. Driving it in near-stock form was a huge surprise; how nimble these cars are even without the power behind them they can be thrown into turns and are incredibly forgiving. Purchased this one on the spot.
The suspension was OEM shocks and off-brand lowering springs, along with Konig Candy 15" wheels wrapped in Yokohama S-Drive. The engine "performance" mod was a hot air intake (unfortunate as I'd much rather have the stock airbox). Other than that, it was stock through and through.
From four different exhausts (OEM, Yonaka [trash], Flowmaster [awful at 3k RPM, finally Cobalt [wonderful]), a suspension overhaul with Koni Yellows, Eibach ProKit, ES sway bar bushings, and Medium-Soft bump stops) changed the dynamic of the car's handling and comfort.
While stock the Miata is an absolute blast to drive, but having gone from boosted cars to an NA car, there was definitely a need for more power. Turbo cars are great and much more efficient, but trying something new for me was definitely needed. Supercharging was the way to go, but I wanted a setup that was more at home in the 90s. Centrifugal, while more efficient, just wasn't what I was looking for; having a whine in the engine bay was certainly needed, and the only supplier available would be Bofi Racing from the UK. Purchased the kit, overlay pulley, and smaller supercharger pulley to get the car to 11 PSI on an M45.
Now that the power was there, I felt it time to make the car just a little ostentatious. Carbon Miata carbon fiber Monster Wing wrapped in gold, GV Style Front Lip (who has money for a real GV lip?) to finish the exterior and give it a bit of 80s vibe for styling.
Some interior bits and pieces through the years; new leather shift boot, heavy weight shift knob, RevLimiter gauge faces, AEM UEGO and TurboSmart gauges, I.L. Motorsport cubby, accelerator pedal extension for easier rev-matching, rounds out the interior for the time being. Seats and a steering wheel will round out the interior.
